According to The Portsmouth, Portsea and Gosport Guide published in 1799 'The salubrity of the air around Portsmouth is evident from the lack of reptiles in the vicinity.'
Byerley Road in Fratton was named after Joseph Whicher Byerley. Joseph, born in 1814 was a coal merchant and later a master baker who provided bread to the dockyard. He lived in 8 Osbourne Terrace. Joseph died 1889 and was buried in Kingston cemetery.
