Brewing has been an important industry in Portsmouth since the 15th century; Sailors liked a drink and many breweries thrived. Young’s brewery stood in Thomas Street, near the Pitt Street Gymnastics Centre, where there had been a brewery since 1836. It closed in 1959. Large-scale brewing in the city ended in 1983 with the closure of Whitbread’s (formerly Brickwoods) in Admiralty Road, Portsea.
